Structural Bodywork
'' It isn't the load that weighs you down, it's the way that you carry it''.
A recognised system of deep tissue manipulation and movement education.
Practised as a series of sessions to restore postural balance and functional
freedom. It has evolved from the work of Dr Ida Rolf. |
| A principle of SI bodywork is that the body is
significantly affected by the force of gravity. In a misaligned state the
body's resources are used inefficiently. Plus most of us have collected
tensions and patterns through the challenges of our lives; from injury or
surgery, imitation of role models and peers, repetitive tasks and sporting
activities, or attitudes which all together makes us who we are and how you
can identify that friend at some distance just by their gait. We are the sum
total of all the events in our lives. Posture is how we present ourselves to
the world. |

KMI, Kinesis Myofascial Integration originated
by Tom Myers, is based on his 30+ years of study with Dr Ida Rolf, Moshe
Feldenkrais and Buckminster Fuller. Working with his 'Anatomy Trains
Meridians', KMI's multisession (3 or 12) protocol of myofascial manipulation
and movement re-integration aims to restore natural balance and alignment.
We aim to free the binding and shortening of connective tissues, fascia
which gives muscles and bodies their support and shape. All muscle fibres,
joints and organs are supported and separated from each other by connective
tissue (fascial network). Tight, shortened or misaligned fascia can generate
joint stiffness, muscle soreness, postural shifts, pain and fatigue. |
|
Who wins ?
Some come to ease chronic pain and stiffness, others to improve athletic
performance. Both children and older people can benefit from improved
structural alignment. |
|
The Benefits.
SI is an individual and personal process, gaining a better balance and
ease of movement. Breathing becomes easier, movement more effortless. More
efficient use of your muscles allows a more economical use of your energy
giving greater vitality and alertness.
Our emotions and behaviour patterns are held in our body and an SI
experience may help release an individual's potential and promote positive
change. A maturing of emotional expression and an increased
sense of presence allowing you to feel, finally, at home in your body. |
|
What to Expect.
The process has 3 or 12 separate and progressive sessions, although these
may need to vary. We will talk over your history and set realistic goals.
Pictures may be taken of your posture to have a record of where you started
and examine your postural pattern. Most sessions are done in your underwear
or bathing suit. Your comfort is paramount but we need to directly contact
the tissues that are restricting the free flow of movement. Much of the
session is done on a treatment table, some on a stool and some standing
As tissue is released, you may experience a range of sensations from warm
to uncomfortable. Appropriate pressure is applied based on your feedback, so
the pace is under your control. Sometimes, as tissue is released, emotions,
memories and traumas held in the fascial tissue may surface creating
opportunity for change and/or resolution.

|
The Sessions The first 4 sessions
are generally superficial, freeing tissues on the front, back and sides,
freeing the shoulders from any binding to the trunk, freeing the breath and
establishing support through the feet. The middle 4
sessions address the 'core' of the body, working into the central
stabilisation muscles closer to the spine, to find support from within.
The last 4 sessions integrate the 'core' and the 'sleeve' to improve
co-ordination and posture, leaving you with a lasting and progressive change
that will echo throughout the rest of your life. |
